Registered Nurse / Medical Surgical Neurology Floor

Job Summary:
Neuro Surgical Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) Days located in Newburgh, Indiana. This position involves providing specialized care to neuro and neuro-surgical patients within a busy hospital unit. The role requires strong neuro assessment skills, critical thinking, and experience with neuro patient populations.

Job Details:

  • Schedule: 12-hour shifts, days, with a minimum of 36 hours per week.
  • Required Qualifications: Candidate must have a current active compact license, AHA BLS, and NIHSS certification. A minimum of two years of solid neuro experience, including one travel assignment and trauma level II experience. Recent EPIC charting experience is required, including the ability to complete a checkoff class.
  • Patient Population: Neuro and neuro-surgical patients such as cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs), elective back/neck surgeries, post-operative craniotomies, and cerebral angiograms. Also includes general medical and psychiatric patients.
  • Skillset: Proficiency in NIHSS and dysphagia screening, strong neuro assessments, basic tele-interpretation, strict I&O tracking, sterile catheterization including Foley and straight catheters, initiation and titration of heparin drips, blood and blood product administration, venipuncture, blood cultures, NG tubes, indwelling drain management, and stable medication administration (e.g., Protonix, Lasix). Must possess excellent assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • Additional Information: This is a teaching hospital setting that may involve precepting students and new hires. The unit has 37 beds with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5-6 during days. The team is well-established, with strong leadership and staff who welcome travelers. Wearing navy blue scrubs (no competing logos) is required. Must be resilient, adaptable to change, and capable of managing high-pressure situations. Cross-campus float may be required with a 2-hour notice.
  • Shift and Orientation details: Orientation is bi-weekly. The traveler is guaranteed set hours per week, except during holidays and unit closures.
