Job Summary:
The Surgical Technician (Operating Room Technician) position is based in an OR setting. This role involves handling instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during congenital heart surgery procedures, assisting the physician while performing related patient care duties in an age-appropriate manner as assigned by the circulating nurse. The technician prepares the operating room according to specific needs and assists with surgical procedures, ensuring patient safety and proper sterile techniques. Experience with cardiothoracic procedures, particularly cardiac bypass/pump cases, is required.
Job Details:
- Schedule: 10-hour shifts, 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with a day off during the week. On-Call is a requirement. Minimum of 40 hours per week.
- Required Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED, completion of surgical technology training program (including military or public health service training programs is acceptable), CST-SUR (Certified Surgical Technologist - Surgical), or TSC-NCCT (Technician - National Center for Competency Testing), with at least 2 years of experience as a surgical technologist in two or more surgical specialties.
- Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience scrubbing cardiac bypass/pump cases, knowledge of a wide variety of instrumentation, equipment, supplies, and surgical procedures relevant to the operating room, and ability to operate sterilizers, microscopes, and surgical equipment such as fiberoptic equipment, electrocautery units, suction machines, orthopedic tourniquets, and air-powered equipment. Effective communication skills and attentiveness to surgeon needs are essential.
- Additional Information: The role requires attention to detail in maintaining counts of sponges, needles, and instruments, as well as assisting in specimen care and labeling. Participation in continuing education and maintaining familiarity with surgical protocols, including Universal Patient Safety Protocols, is expected.
