Registered Nurse / Medical Surgical Oncology Floor

Job Summary:
Medical Surgical Oncology Floor Nurse - Bridgeport, WV. This role involves providing nursing care on a Telemetry unit that specializes in medical surgical and oncology patient management. The position requires night shifts with a focus on patient safety, treatment administration, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Job Details:

• Schedule: 12-hour night shifts, with a minimum of 36 hours per week.
• Required Qualifications: Valid license to practice as a registered nurse, BLS (American Heart Association) certification, and at least 2 years of relevant nursing experience in a Medical Surgical or Oncology setting.
• Preferred Qualifications: Experience with oncology treatments, chemotherapy administration, and familiarity with chest tubes and PleurX chest tubes is a plus. BLS certification is required; additional certifications such as ACLS, NIHSS, or ENPC are advantageous.
• Patient Care: Care for general medical-surgical patients, including post-operative procedures such as lap chole and lap appendectomy, oncology patients with complications (neutropenic precautions, pneumonia, infections), and those requiring chemotherapy, chest tubes, or PleurX drains. Occasionally, psych patients may be admitted, potentially requiring 1:1 sitter care.
• Clinical Skills: RN`s must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips on Phillips monitors. Management of Heparin drips is required; nurses do not titrate other drips or manage cardiac gtts.
• Team and Staffing: Charge nurses are present 24/7 but do not take patient assignments during day shifts; night shift charge nurses do take patients. There are designated CNAs with a ratio of 3 on days and nights, who assist with patient care tasks including blood sugar monitoring.
• Respiratory Equipment: Respiratory therapists manage CPAP, BiPAP, vents, and trachs; nurses are not expected to manage respiratory equipment.
• Scheduling: Shifts are 7:00 AM 7:00 PM and 7:00 PM 7:00 AM. Self-scheduling or block scheduling is not specified; schedule is made 4 to 6 weeks in advance.
• Weekend & Holiday Requirements: Every-other-weekend shifts are expected, with alternating days/nights. Holiday work is included as part of the rotation.
• Floating & Ratios: Staff may float to other MedSurg or Telemetry units; ratios are capped at 1:4 when floating to lower acuity units. No restrictions on first-time travelers.
• Dress Code: Royal blue scrubs are required for nurses.
• Orientation: Travelers will receive a specified number of orientation shifts with a preceptor.
• Additional Notes: Unit uses EPIC charting system. Phone implementation procedures are in place. Recent updates include contact via email with designated coordinators.
