Registered Nurse / Psychiatric Unit

Job Summary:
Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN) Louisville, Kentucky. This role involves providing specialized mental health care on a busy pediatric unit that handles children and adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The position requires managing highly dynamic and potentially agitated patients, often involving physical de-escalation and restraint techniques, in a fast-paced environment. The RN will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the safety and well-being of all patients.

Job Details:

• Shift Schedule: Days shift, 12 hours per shift, minimum of 36 hours per week.
• Required Qualifications: Valid nursing license; BLS (Basic Life Support) certification; CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) training obtained on site; 6 months of experience working with children or adolescents in a behavioral health setting.
• Preferred Qualifications: Experience managing agitated patients and performing physical holds; ability to communicate effectively with families and staff; comfort with physical interventions such as seclusion or mechanical restraints if needed.
• Patient Types and Diagnoses: Children typically age 3-10 with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including verbal and non-verbal patients who may require full assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADL), hygiene, and behavioral redirection. Patients can be impulsive and physically aggressive, requiring multiple physical holds and safety precautions.
• Unit Operations: High safety emphasis with support from leadership and behavioral specialists, including security and advanced practitioners. The unit is equipped with restraint chairs, physical hold practices, and seclusion rooms.
• Floating and Flexibility: Candidates should be open to floating to other units serving children or adults as needed and adapting to variable schedules and shift placements.
• Orientation: New employees will undergo orientation with the facility`s New Employee Orientation program and spend three 12-hour shifts, with one shift floating to another unit.
• Scheduling: Weekend rotation scheduled every third week; no on-call required; holiday schedule based on facility needs; RTO (Request for Time Off) approval of up to 5 days.
