Job Description

Job Summary:
The organization is seeking a Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) for a unit located in West Virginia. This position involves working on a 12-hour night shift in an acute care setting, providing direct patient care for a diverse patient population with various diagnoses such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, altered mental status, gastrointestinal bleeding, alcohol withdrawal, and falls or weakness. The RN will be responsible for performing vital signs, blood glucose monitoring, EKG interpretation, applying heart monitors, bathing, feeding, toileting, and repositioning patients.

Job Details:

  • Schedule: 12-hour night shifts, with scheduled weekends as required; shifts typically include working Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The schedule is made by the manager, and flexibility is expected to help fill staffing gaps. Rotation between days and nights may occur every two weeks.
  • Required Qualifications: Valid RN license, BLS certification; minimum of 1 year of experience in a medical surgical setting or related field. Candidates may include those with first-time travel experience or those with certifications such as CNA or PCT training to qualify.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Experience with titratable medication drips such as heparin, bumex, and lasix; ability to perform tasks related to respiratory therapy including monitoring ventilators, administering breathing treatments, inhalers, ABGs, and managing respiratory equipment like Bipap, Cpap, and high-flow oxygen.
  • Nurse Aides/PCTs: Nurse aides or patient care techs are present on the unit to assist with patient care tasks.
  • Patient Ratios and Duties: The typical nurse-to-patient ratio is approximately 1:10-12, though this might be higher during certain times. Responsibilities include vital signs, blood glucose monitoring, EKGs, heart monitor application, patient bathing, feeding, toileting, and repositioning.
  • Additional Important Notes:
    • RNs are not generally required to operate or troubleshoot respiratory equipment beyond monitoring.
    • Telemetry monitors are read by designated monitor techs; nurses are not expected to interpret telemetry strips.
    • The unit requires a specific scrubs color code: Navy blue for RNs, Ceil Blue for PCTs, and black and pink for secretaries.
    • Orientation includes one day with an educator/computer system and one day with a preceptor.
    • The facility operates on an acute care basis, with staff expected to be flexible and adaptable to floating across different units when needed.
    • There is a medication and emergency response environment requiring compliance with facility standards and protocols.
