Job Summary:
A Step Down Unit Nurse is needed at a healthcare facility in Evansville, Indiana. The position involves providing care to post-procedure cardiac and neuro patients during night shifts. This role offers an engaging environment focused on critical patient assessments, advanced cardiac care, and neuro evaluations, supporting patient recovery and stabilization.

Job Details:

  • Location: Evansville, Indiana
  • Shift Time: Nights (12-hour shifts, 6:30 PM 7:00 AM)
  • Schedule: Minimum of 36 hours per week
  • Start Date: 08/24/2026
  • Required Qualifications: Associate Degree or Certificate, current active compact license, AHA Basic Life Support (BLS), AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). Minimum experience includes 5 years of solid Step Down Unit experience, or 2 years of Step Down plus 1 travel contract, or 5 years of solid Stepdown experience if no travel experience. Recent EPIC charting experience required (checkoff class may be needed).
  • Preferred Qualifications: None specified.
  • Float: First to float within skillset; potential to float to nearby campuses with a 2-hour notice for cross-campus float. Mid-shift float within the same campus is possible.
  • On Call/Call Back: Not required.
  • Weekend/Holiday Requirement: Three weekends out of every six-week schedule; every other holiday.
  • Patient Population: Post-procedure cardiac patients (e.g., cath/stents/interventions, pacers, ICD, ablation), STEMI/NSTEMI, carotid endarterectomy, sepsis, neurological patients (CVAs, seizures, TBI), DKA.
  • Skillset: Tele/12-lead EKG interpretation (must pass tele tests), post-heart cath care (femoral and TR bands), initiate/titrate drips (e.g., Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitroglycerin, Insulin, Heparin), NIHSS and neuro assessments, sepsis care, chest tubes, PIV insertion, strong assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • Unit Details: 19 beds (8 designated Step Down, 11 Medical/Surgical), nurse-to-patient ratios: Night shift 1:4 for Stepdown and up to 1:7 for Medical/Surgical, with nurses taking patients directly. May require precepting students and new hires.
  • Scrubs: Navy blue scrubs with no competing health system or agency logos.
  • Additional Info: The unit has a long-standing management team with minimal turnover. Teaching hospital environment. COVID-19 vaccination not required.
  • Shift Notes: 12-hour night shifts.
  • Beds: 19 beds designated for patient care.
